DESCRIPTION
The prerequisites
In order to have a fruitful use of this website some basic knowledge in the field of general and inorganic chemistry are necessary. To understand and appreciate the experiments shown in the movies the students need to recognise and manage the most common inorganic reactions. In particular the red-ox reactions and the meaning and usage of the reduction potential are required.
The contents
In this website the known elements are described according to the typical systematic classification in groups and period. The properties of the elements are described together with some historical, commercial and general interest informations. A part is dedicated to the ores, with explanations of some metallurgical reactions to obtain the pure metals from the ores. The information are very often enhanced by author self made movies, showing experiments.
The aims
The author declares the purpose of a scientific description of the elements which can be interesting for both students and common people. This is due to a personal passion for the chemical elements.
Task Description
The different groups of the periodic table are described, focusing on their appearance in the elemental state, some informations about physical and chemical properties are also provided. The chemical properties are explained, at least for the group representative element, together with movies regarding experiments on their reactivity. The reactivity is usually referred to water and oxygen (air). The elements description is accompanied by useful and good images of them, as they appear in their foundamental state.
How to use it in class
This resource can be used by the teachers of chemistry as an additional tool to their lectures and laboratory experiences, particularly in case of that experiments which is not possible to do in practice. Furthermore some movies can suggest simple demonstrations to set up at school.
COMMENTS
Points of strength
A self made website could result more involving for students. Some experiments, shown in the movies, are interesting, particular and not easy to do in laboratory at school (for example the ore roasting piryte).
Points of weakness
The understanding of the different explanations (written in the text and oral in the movies) required a knowledge and a good managing of the foundamental topics of general chemistry.
Scientific reliability
All the descriptions are reliable. The chemical reactions shown in the movies are generally corrected.
Pedagogic value
This resource is useful as an integration of the courses of general and inorganic chemistry (and laboratory activity) and could result attractive for students of the secondary school. For adults without basic chemistry knowledge it is not completely understandable.
