DESCRIPTION
The educational presentations are designed for pupils from the 8th and 9th grade of primary school. The presentation outline is clearly established, the titles correspond to the content of presentations. The chemistry curriculum passes through presentations from the beginning - from the history of chemistry, through general and inorganic to organic chemistry. There are neither neglected the basic concepts. The aim of all presentations and crosswords is to help the teachers to motivate students and increase the attractiveness of the subject. This can only happen if the presentations are professionally correct and the graphic design perfect. Unfortunately, it is not the truth in many cases. Only in some presentations the ratio of written text and truly illustrative images are appropriately chosen.
The presentations should be used only if the teacher wants to demonstrate the structure of some element, when it is clearly defined. It is not suitable when the presentation shows homologous series of hydrocarbons and structural formulas for the next several slides. It becomes hard for students to read in it.
In order to increase students' interest and motivation to learn, the colour and shape of the fonts, images or background presentations are to be helpful. But the background and the images in the presentations are not always used properly. Sometimes the font is so colourful and wavy that it is difficult to read. The images don’t relate to the topic. The presentations that are useful are those that show something that is difficult to show in class otherwise – changing of model structure. They are not applicable when the presentation contains text only, and then there is no sense to use them. Crosswords and puzzles are interesting; they could be used during classes for diversification, or for various competitions. It is important the crosswords corresponding to the basic topic to improve the knowledge. But unfortunately, it is not the truth in many cases.
COMMENTS
1) Only some of the presentations can be used, for example the presentation "Mixtures", "Separation of components of mixtures" and some others
2) Some presentations even contain errors or show misleading practices such as:
– in the presentation of "Acids" is the acid defined as the compound of hydrogen and oxygen
- in the presentation of "Calculations solutions", nor the formula or the rule of three is used
- in the presentation of " Derivatives of hydrocarbons 2. Alcohols and phenols”, wrong colour of phenol is reported
- in the presentation of "Burning, extinguishing", the hazardous symbols are not quite correctly described
This is not a complete list of deficiencies, but only examples.
3) Some presentations use unusual fonts within the titles causing confusion. Examples of presentation "Chemical terminology - oxides"
4) Some of the pictures have nothing to do with the discussed topic. For example - in the presentation of "Oxides" representatives - why such pictures for aluminium oxide and silicon oxide.
5) Some presentations are missing illustrative images entirely, such as the presentation of "Elements 1. Halogens "
6) Some presentations cannot be opened, or other presentation opens instead. For example, in the place of the link for the presentation on "Fats", the presentation on "Redox processes” opens.
6) The crossword and puzzles are useful.
