DESCRIPTION
This e-book is written and published by the Turkish Ministry of Education. It is freely available at the web-site of Publishing Department of Turkish Ministry of Education. The web-site does not require registering or any other special prerequisite for reviewing or downloading these e-books.

This e-book is a more colourful and enriched electronic version of a chemistry textbook for the 1st grade of upper secondary school in Turkey. In Turkey, students first take the chemistry course at the 1st grade of upper secondary school.

The education material is organized in five units with several subsections.
These sections are the following: Historical Development of Chemistry (with 3 subsections), Compounds (with 4 subsections), Chemical changes (with 3 subsections), Mixtures (with 2 subsections) and Chemistry in Our Life (with 4 subsections).

Each unit of the e-book begins with a picture related to the unit and the description of the contents of the unit and the unit’s subsections. After than, there is always a 3-4 paragraphs text about the history or everyday life situations of the related phenomenon explained in the unit. The topic and idea of the unit is described basicly by a combination of text, pictures and photos.

Each subsections of the units have 1 or 2 activities related to the subject of the unit. The activities are easy and practical that students can do the activities at home or at school. The activities sections have some pictures or photos so that the students or teachers can see and understand what they should do for the activity.

Each subsection has a section named “research”. In this section, the book offers some research topics for students and teachers related to the subject of the subsection or the unit. Each subsection has also a section named “Do you know”. In this section, there are generally some practical and interesting real-life situations and examples related to the subject of the subsection or the unit. Each section usually ends with a reading text. There are also some exercises, problems or questions at the end of the subsections and units.

The educational material provided, aims mainly in studying on his/her own. The material is presented in a way that aims to attract student’s attention and interest in learning chemistry. This e-book aims to connect theoretical basis of chemistry and the everyday life experiences of the students. It also aims to encourage self-learning and motivate the students to learn chemistry by themselves.

The activities to be performed by the students are described in a way which is clear and user-friendly. The material is designed mainly for use by the students themselves for self-learning and self-evaluation. The teachers of chemistry can also use the e-book for their teaching in the classroom by using computers and smartboards.
COMMENTS
This e-book is written and designed in an attractive manner that students can easily use and understand it. It makes chemistry attractive and appealing to the students. The texts, pictures and photos related to the subjects are very practical and makes the subjects more understandable. In addition, the activities and the “do you know” sections accomplish to make the connection of chemistry and the everyday life situations. On the other hand, there is a lack of interactive material, videos and links about the topics. Links to the interactive materials would make the comprehension of the students better. The material in the e-book is written by specialists in their area and the information is scientifically reliable. This educational material is easily available, and the web-site does not require any registration, fee for downloading or any other special software.
