DESCRIPTION
Prerequisites:
Java is required for some plugins to run.
It is required that the student knows the basic knowledge of chemistry.

Contents:
Historical evolution of the concept of atom, electronic structure, attempts to group the elements, periodic law, periodic properties, atomic radius, atomic volume, electronic affinity, ionization potential, periodic table.

This resource can be used with these levels:

3º ESO / Nature Sciences: Physics and Chemistry
1º Bachillerato: Physics and Chemistry
2º Bachillerato: Chemistry

It is a resource about the the study of the periodic table of elements. Structured around four themes: the atom in the history, electronic structure , ordering the diverse and the periodic law. It is supplemented by information about the periodic properties: radio and volume of the atom, electron affinity and ionization potential. The resource shows the change in these properties along periods and groups, and provide brief biographical sketches of the philosophers and scientists who appear in the text.
The resort also includes a periodic table in which, through a color code, shows the distribution of chemical elements in groups, natural state, metallicity, electronic structure and anomalies within it.
Each element is shown with its symbol, name, crystal system, acid-base characteristics, volume and atomic radius, ionic radius, ionization potential, electron affinity and electronegativity.
In this periodic table can be checked further how periodic properties change in different periods.

The website is divided in didactic units and include reinforcement/consolidation and extension/follow up activities.

It has a second prize from INTE (National institute of Educational Technologies and Teacher Training) as educational resource in 2000.

Aims:
- Develop and facilitate ICT-based learning activities in the context of teaching chemistry.
- provide students with an study of chemistry which will include the following areas of study: Atomic theory and structure and Periodic properties
- to develop an appreciation of how science has contributed to the historical and cultural development of our society.

Use in classroom:
The educational materials are designed for classroom use.
The educational materials are designed for classroom use in:
3º ESO / Physics and Chemistry
4º ESO / Physics and Chemistry
1º Bachillerato / Physics and Chemistry
2º Bachillerato / Chemistry
COMMENTS
Points of strength:
Facility in access and use of the resource, attractive simulations, and interactive activities.

The website is divided in didactic units and include reinforcement/consolidation and extension/follow up activities.

Points of weakness:
- It´s restricted to one aspect of chemistry: atomic structure and periodic properties.
- The students can´t correct some activities because website doesn´t provide its solutions (notebook activities).

Scientific reliability:
Good.

Pedagogic value:
Good pedagogic value, good historical contents and medium-high level activities.
