DESCRIPTION OF CONTENTS
The publication deals with a complex project teaching of the subject of chemistry in elementary schools. It is a didactic handbook for elementary school chemistry teachers. The whole publication is divided into four chapters presented on 144 pages. The first chapter is devoted to the characterization of project teaching, definition of the key terms, description of project types, the main principles of project teaching, the importance and benefits of project teaching and development of the key skills through project learning. Individual phases of project teaching (preparation, implementation and evaluation) are described in detail. In the second chapter, the authors focus on selection of appropriate topics for chemistry project teaching at the elementary school level according to the ISCED (grades 6-9). Suitable topics for 11 topic areas are included. In the third chapter are in detail described proposals for projects in several topics: Water (as an interdisciplinary topic), Mineral water in my area, Rain water and acid rain, Combustion, Waste and recycling and others. The project proposals are done according to the four level plan of Demuth with focus on the topic selection, description of project objectives for the topic and interdisciplinar relations to the mentioned topic. The last chapter is devoted to the presentation of executed projects from elementary schools. The methodology of the projects and draft proposals are prepared in the same ways with the difference of included student works (presentations, posters, banners, the results of experimental measurings, student videos). They are enriched with photographs of activities (e.g. field trips, school exhibitions, conferences etc.). The authors of the publication also included in the annexes ideas for interesting experiments for individual proposed project topics. A CD with examples of student works is included with the publication.
REVIEWER’S COMMENTS ON THE PUBLICATION
In terms of the needs for the project Chemistry this publications covers the field of preparation of elementary school chemistry teachers but can be also interesting and useful for high school chemistry teachers. The aim of the publication is to highlight the potential use of project teaching in the teaching of chemistry as well as other natural science subjects at elementary schools. Project teaching helps students better understand the discussed topic, develeps their key competences as well as the skills of the teacher. Project teaching is based on solving both theoretical and practical problems with an active participation of the student. The authors of the publication offer a large number of ideas and proposals for the project implementation, recommend appropriate experiments for the proposed projects as well as examples of already executed projects. Despite the fact that our educational system considers project teaching as complimentary to the traditional way of teaching it allows to improve both teaching and learning qualities. We believe that the publication will inspire many chemistry teachers to come up with and execute their own projects. Surely it will help the new teachers to overcome the starting problems associated with planning and implementation of the projects. Ideas for project works can be also used in the optional subjects and afterschool courses.
