DESCRIPTION
The step-by-step “Towards color discovery in Medieval Illumination” is organized in three main areas: Introduction, Notebooks and Annexes. The notebooks can be used independently to implement activities in classroom, during study visits or in a workshop. These activities are presented in a book of activities and exercises where, step by step, the creation of an illumination (Livro das Aves – “Book of Birds” and Apocalipse do Lorvão – “Revelation of Lorvão”) is exemplified. The book of exercises can serve as a starting point for projects planning and exploratory activities around Medieval Illumination, using again as examples the “Book of birds” and “Revelation of Lorvão”. The following books (“Color in Medieval Illumination, Pigments, Binders, Parchment, Writing instruments and Safety data sheets) provided the needed additional information to support the proposed activities.

COMMENTS
This is a very interesting resource provided by the “Department of Conservation and Restoration” of Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia - Universidade Nova de Lisboa, and developed within the context of a Project POCTI/EAT/33782/2000 financed by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) and coordinated by Prof. Dra. Maria João Melo.
This is a nice way to introduce students to the chemistry of color, historical use of pigments and its manufacture while dealing with Medieval Illumination. A perfect combination: chemistry, history and arts.
