DESCRIPTION
This resource pack and the accompanying website have been developed by the Environmental Protection Agency to support teachers and students in exploring the Irish environment, in the context of the second level curriculum. By using a combination of clips from the Eco Eye TV Series, support materials and up to date information on the Irish environment, teachers and students can explore the key environmental issues that we face today.
This is part of a set of resources for science teaching that has been developed by the Environmental protection Agency (EPA) in Ireland. 2020 Vision, the EPA's strategy to the year 2020, outlines six goals to protect and improve Ireland's Environment. The resources on this website have been developed to support teachers and students in exploring these goals in the context of the second level curriculum.
This section on water treatment has been chosen for its particular relevance to chemistry teaching.
The resources include short video clips from the Eco Eye TV series (which will be very familiar to Irish viewers) and a range of corresponding resource materials to explore the key environmental issues we face today.

A series of lesson plans on sewage treatment, drinking water and climate change have been developed for the EPA as part of the Science and Technology in Action resource. These can be used on their own or after viewing of relevant clips from Eco Eye as an introduction to the topic at hand. Each lesson consists of activities, an on-line quiz, sample exam questions and a glossary of terms. The specific links to the relevant junior or senior cycle syllabus are listed in each lesson.

Teachers have access to lesson plans, video clips, student comprehension exercises for use after viewing the film clips, and other resource materials, like the downloadable summary sheet with a page of different types of exercise, including questions from exam papers. The resource has also been developed so that it can be used particularly in Transition Year as part of an applied science programme. Irish language versions fo the resource material are available.
The format is very clear and easy to use, as well as being relevant to chemistry in everyday life. Suggested activities allow for further exploration of the issues and include group work, brainstorming, map work and individual research.
The depth of study can then be expanded through individual and group fieldwork investigations. Templates for questionnaires and a guide to research methodology are provided.
COMMENTS
This is an attractive set of resources which draws on the expertise of the EPA scientists and marries them well with the engaging presentations clipped from the TV series. It is interactive and informed by sound pedagogical principles. The comprehension can be used as a stand-alone exercise, and also offers ideas for group work that will focus the students to the important points in the video clip.

This resource pack suits the transition year philosophy and guidelines. It is skills-based and allows the student to extend their interests and research skills through a range of different methodologies. It will engage the student in active learning strategies based on issues and activities largely within the local community.

Message: A resource for teachers full of downloadable lesson pland and materials, activities for students.
It concentrates mainly on environmental issues
- clean air
- clean water
- protected soil and biodiversity
- limiting and adapting to climate change
The resources for teachers contain video clips and .pdf exercises/ activities for students. They should be done after watching the video clips and can be both used with/ or without the coursebook.
All the materials are very up-to-date and very realistic.

Message: The teaching resource described is useful for me because it shows real problems, real effort to solve problems, and real methods to achieve good results. What is more, material is very current.

It can increase the students’ interest toward chemistry because everyone needs water, everyone uses water and everyone likes bathing. Short videos are a very useful form to attract student ´s attention. Many of them can realize that clear water is not only natural product, but many chemists and biologists and local authorities have to take care of it. What is important is that speeches in videos are not too long.

The material can help the students to understand better and faster: Firstly movie is a more memorable form than text in a book, or a teacher ´s speech even with a computer presentation, and secondly thanks to prepared support materials, comprehension exercise – students are made not only to watch, they have to collect the most important pieces of information. Group form of work is more popular for students, too.

The resource proposes an innovative didactical approach since it uses modern media that is favourable among students. Moreover, for me as a teacher, it is thoroughly and teacher-friendly prepared topic. It is also inspirational for creation of a similar material (taking videos, asking authorities, studying conditions) in our surroundings by students alone.

Message: This teaching resource is an educational webpage well-designed for every single person in the world. This can be a useful resource for every generations who feel to take responsibility for obstacling the water pollution. On the other hand there is no doubt that this teaching resource will increase the interest of every single person fort his area. One of the most important situation in the human being history was cleaning water in a good way.Especially accumulation of knowledge and progressing the some technological materials are making it easy but not enough to obstacle it. So maybe this website will be inspiration for some students or others.
By the way the material in the site can be used as the main or as an additional teaching tool in the classroom, and out of it.It definitely help people understand cleaning water issues better and faster by offering a different perspective. In addition containing some games emerge that childrens can enter to this website easy and funny way.

National Reports on successful experiences to promote lifelong learning for chemistry The national reports on chemistry successful experiences to promote lifelong learning for chemistry are now available on the related section of the project portal. The reports presents examples of successful experiences in the partner countries and the results of testing of ICT resources with science teachers.
