Message: This resource is very interesting because it gives meaning to learning through appealing topics.
Indeed, by clicking on “Chemistry Now”, we discover a whole series of topics in chemistry: chemistry of chocolate, chemistry of colours, chemistry of flowers, chemistry of plastics, chemistry of hamburgers...
Each topic includes several documents: videos and/or articles.
Those topics along with the video document situates learning in reality, which is indispensable to give meaning and thus to raise the student’s interest. Indeed, the video document puts the topic in its historical context and provides concrete examples from everyday life.
For each video document, there are two nails (transcript and lessons) and, on its other side, a description of the video with key words. In the “transcript” nail, there is the complete description of the video and in the “lessons” nail, one or several link(s) to teaching note classified by level of studies.
The teaching notes describe experimental activities that can be done by students. Each note explains the pedagogical objectives, the target audience, the key concepts addressed, the definitions of scientific vocabulary, the procedure, the bibliography.
It is an interesting tool for the teacher. Indeed, s/he can integrate visual teaching tools and experimental activities related to the videos in a learning sequence. Thus, these experimental activities and videos will raise students’ interest. Understanding can also be helped, for the films contain animations, explanations, models, experiments… and the teaching notes provide definitions of specific words.
Moreover, the student can better master abstract theoretical concepts thanks to the experimental approach.
Comments in English in the video can be an impediment to the use of the tool. However, the transcription of the video helps better understanding. Moreover, the teacher can consider interdisciplinarity with the English teacher, which gives variety to learning methods.
National Reports on successful experiences to promote lifelong learning for chemistry The national reports on chemistry successful experiences to promote lifelong learning for chemistry are now available on the related section of the project portal. The reports presents examples of successful experiences in the partner countries and the results of testing of ICT resources with science teachers.
