The particulate nature of matter is one of the most fundamental principles of chemistry and physics. An understanding of this concept is very important for students to grasp related concepts well. In this study, a test with five open-ended questions related to daily phenomena about the particulate nature of matter was developed and used to collect data. The test was implemented to 150 lycee 1 and 100 lycee 2 students selected from different schools in the city of Trabzon. Students’ responses were classified into understanding, misconception, no understanding,and no response categories. The ratio of lycee 1 and lycee 2 students’ responses in the understanding category are 17-35% and 24-44%, respectively. Results indicated that this concept was not understood adequately. Based on the results some suggestions were made by authors.

National Reports on successful experiences to promote lifelong learning for chemistry The national reports on chemistry successful experiences to promote lifelong learning for chemistry are now available on the related section of the project portal.
