Message: In this study, a test with five open-ended questions related to daily phenomena about the particulate nature of matter was developed and used to collect data. The test was implemented to 150 lycee 1 and 100 lycee 2 students selected from different schools in the city of Trabzon. Student responses were classified into understanding, misconception, no understanding,and no response categories. The ratio of lycee 1 and lycee 2 student responses in the understanding category are 17-35% and 24-44%, respectively. Results indicated that this concept was not understood adequately. Based on the results some suggestions were made by authors.
