DESCRIPTION OF CONTENTS
National Institute for Education in Bratislava in cooperation with the Faculty of Science of Pavel Jozef Safarik University in Kosice organised a seminar on Inovative approaches to teaching natural science subjects. Introduced here were inovative natural science teaching methods (Inquiry Based Science Education) as well were presented experiences and results from research methods applied in natural science education within the ESTABLISH project. Based on the cooperation a few publications were created. They can be downloaded from the National Institute for Education webpage. The publications present realized practical examples of research oriented educational activities in natural science subjects at the elementary and high school levels. Moreover, presented are teaching materials for the subjects of chemistry, physics and biology from various levels of student inquiry independency point of view. ESTABLISH INQUIRY BASED SCIENCE EDUCATION project makes inovative teaching methods and approaches in teaching natural sciences more familiar. Inquiry education, research and discovery by the students create an important part of the education in the process of acquisition of the key competences in the field of (not only) nature sciences. Students inquiry, research and acquisition allow to acquire new knowledge as well as understand the essence of science itself. The presented publication is aimed for the elementary and high school chemistry teachers. Two topics for research methods are: Gap research, Plastics and plastic waste. The first topic deals with the chemical structure of substances and following properties of the substances- research of the “holes” in various substances. The topic is divided into three parts: the visible holes, the invisible holes and the interesting holes. Each part includes proposals for student research activities. The second topic is divided in two parts: Plastics and Wastes from plastics. Similarly different student research and inquiry activity proposals are attached for the second topic.
REVIEWER’S COMMENTS ON THE PUBLICATION
Considering the needs of the Chemistry project the mentioned publication covers the area of chemistry teacher training and points to the use of inovative teaching methods in natural science. It is an example of various research activities which can be used in the teaching process. The IBSE activity proposals cover two selected topics: Gap research- investigation of the substance structure and properties; Plastics and plastic waste- researching the properties of different types of plastics (solubility, thermal and electric conductivity, burning and recycling of plastics etc.). The publication consists of various activities for active learning and active participation of the students- proposals for experiments, task solving, examples of student worksheets. Recommended is also consulting of IBSE activity publications for other subjects- physics and biology which were created in cooperation. They will surely be inspiring for many elementary and high school nature science teachers.
